The Yangtze River Research Institute supports the rescue action of Dabry's sturgeon (Acipenser dabryanus)

The launch ceremony of the "RescueAction Plan of Dabry's sturgeon " with the theme of "Catch a great protection, save the Dabry's sturgeon " and the restocking activities were held in Yibin, Sichuan province on May 17, 2018. The Yangtze River fisheries research institute is the co-organizer of this activity.

About 400 people including the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Vice Minister Kang Zhen, Academician Cao Wenxuan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan Provincial People's Government, Yibin Municipal People's Government, and related scientific research units, public welfare organizations and social dischargers attended the event. Leaders and experts from the Yangtze River Research Institute, the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences also participated in the event.

The restocking activity is one of the important actions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to launch the rescue action plan of Dabry's sturgeon. On the day of the event, the “RescueAction Plan of Dabry's sturgeon (2018-2035)”, which was prepared by theresearchers from Yangtze River Research Institute, was officially issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. As a guide to the future action to save the Dabry's sturgeons, the action plan focuses on the reconstruction of natural populations, and proposes controlled reproduction and release, habitat protection and restoration, stock preservation, domestication and reproduction and training base construction, germplasm conservation and management, action plans for reintroduction, monitoring and evaluation, and measures to combine protection and utilization and broad participation of society, which will be important to the restoration of the natural population of Dabry's sturgeons.

At the event site, the largest scale restocking of Dabry's sturgeons, which is the national first-class protection animal was carried out, and a total of 85,000 fries, juveniles and parents of different sizes were released. This is also the first time that the parent of Dabry's sturgeons has been released into the Yangtze River. The Yangtze River Research Institute, the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences provided some broodfish and juveniles for the event, and was responsible for the sign release and post-scientific monitoring and evaluation. Among them, 20 parents (both weights about 15kg) and 2100 juveniles (both weights about 2.5kg) were provided, besides, the 40 tails of parents were implanted with ultrasonic markers, PIT markers and anchors, and the 5,000 tails of larvae were implanted with PIT markers. At the same time, 27 ultrasonic monitoring networks were deployed in Yibin to Three Gorges reservoir section of the Yangtze River, and monitoring sites were set up in 14 places including Yibin, Nanxi, Zhangzhou, Jiangjin and Chongqing, to monitor and evaluate the releasing Dabry's sturgeons.

The Yangtze river sturgeon, also known as the Dabry's sturgeon, is a first-level protected animal in China. It is a unique fish in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and also an important economic fish historically, and has important scientific research value. Due to human activities, the habitat of the Yangtze River is seriously damaged, the wild individuals are basically extinct, and the species continues to face serious problems, Therefore, saving the Dabry's sturgeonshas become an important and urgent task.
