Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences found that this year no juvenile  sturgeons were found swimming along the Yangtze toward the sea during the period they usually do. This Investigations verified the results of no reproduction monitored on the sole spawning ground below Gezhouba Dam.  They concluded that no natural reproduction of Acipenser sinensis was took placed  in 2013.  It is the first time of no natural reproduction since 1981, when damming of the Yangtze River by the Gezhouba Hydroelectric Project.
