Wisconsin's sturgeon spawning season in the Lake Winnebago, Fox, and Wolf River system heads towards new all time highs. Latest counts indicate the population to be still increasing and extremely large fish showing up. Between March 17th and April 17th repeated spawning events of Lake sturgeon (A. fulvescens have been reported by Wisconsin DNR teams. The ultimate achievement for this year is the first reproduction of lake sturgeon in the river section above Balsam Row Dam following a transplant of fish into the section of the river located in the Menominee tribal reserve. Access to this section of the river was blocked for more than 100 years. The Menominee tribe issued a press release for this important cultural event which is given below.
