Proceedings of the 2nd Status Workshop on Identification of Acipenseriformes Species in Trade.
Journal of Applied Ichthyology Volume 24 Supplement 1, pages 1- 70.
This special issue represents the outcome of a Workshop co-organized by the IUCN Sturgeon Specialist Group (Genetics Sub-Committee) and the World Sturgeon Conservation Society. In early 1998, trade in all sturgeon and paddlefish species was regulated by CITES and to ensure effective enforcement of the regulation in trade an universal labeling system of all caviar products was proposed. Considering the similarity in the size, shape and color of caviar harvested from different species and to assist in the identificattion of the origin of the products in trade, it was suggested all products being subjected to genetic evaluation. In compliance with the resolution the workshop discussed and evaluated the state of the art on sturgeon species and product identification. The 2008 Supplement of the Journal contains the peer review contributions to the workshop.
