This issue of the Journal of Applied Ichthyology was developed out of a conference entitled Evolution, Ecology, and Management of Scaphiryhynchus held in St. Louis, Missouri, USA (11-13 January 2005), reflecting the growing need for the synthesis of a great body of knowledge on these fishes that has been developing in recent years.
