Behaviour, migrations, distribution, and stocks of Sturgeons in the Volga-Caspian Basin.
Neu Wulmstorf; World Sturgeon Conservation Society Special Publication, No. 3, pp. 233 pages. ISBN 978-3-8391-5449-6.
This is a translation and partly revision of a Russian book with the same title which was published in 2007. The book summarizes more than half a century of work on sturgeons in the Caspian Sea basin. The six chapters deal with (1) general characteristics of the study region, (2) spawning migrations in the Volga River, including temporal and spatial characteristics, (3) Post-spawning migrations, (4) Specific behavioural features of early life stages during downstream migration, (5) Distribution of sturgeons in the Caspian Sea, and (6) Fishery yields and major trends in sturgeon stock changes in the Volga-Caspian basin.
The translation has seen some streamlining of the text, as many parts of the origianl text came from older publications (coverage since the end of World War II). Special attention was paid to maintain the original spirit and core meaning while slightly shortening the text where appropriate.
Extensive discussions with the authors have not only led to some corrections but also to several new and shared interpretations of results while also combining several data sets into one graphic, thereby adding clarity while also updating the statistics. Therefore, the English version of the book represents partly a revision.
