Passages for fish: overcoming barriers for large migratory fish.
(Proceedings of a workshop held at Piacenza, Italy, June 10, 2006 on „Fish elevators: a tool for overcoming barriers for large migratory species“. World Sturgeon Conservation Society, Special Publication No. 2: pp. IV, 165. (Books on Demand, Norderstedt, Germany: ISBN – 978-3-8370-6142-0).
The present volume addresses only one of the many critical issues associated with excessive riverine water resource use and in particular with the regulations of river systems through dam construction mainly used for hydro power, irrigation and drinking water purposes. The contributions presented in this volume reflect the key issues and topics discussed at a specific workshop held in Piacenza, Italy, in conjunction with the 2006 WSCS Board meeting and General Assembly. The workshop draw specific attention to the situation in the middle reaches of the Po River where for many years the dam under consideration certainly impairs the free movement and spawning migrations of the highly endangered Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii). With the option of constructing a new lock system for larger ships, th unique opportunity arises to convert the old ship-lock into a decent „fishpass“ for large migratory species such as sturgeons. The workshop included contributions on the general stock status of sturgeons, the general problem of hydro dams as barriers and the ongoing remediation measures in Europe and overseas (including China, Russia and North America) to rescue the dwindling and highly endangered sturgeon species.
